Heavens Open Up for a Memorable Day

New Year's Picnic 2010

Sunday, January 24, 2010

In what will be remembered as a most memorable day, the Progressive Community of Agiassos (Sydney) staged its New Year's Picnic at Gannamatta Bay, Cronulla.

Despite the early morning rain, the clouds cleared to produce a comfortable summer's day for Sydney's Agiassiotes and friends to bring in the New Year with wondeful picnic- with lots of festive spirit and good cheer.

A New Year's Picnic would not as such without the traditional cutting of the tasty Vasilopites- made by Secretary, Toula Rougellis. The lucky winners of the coins- and the good luck they will bring throughout 2010- were Katina Xanthou and Maria Karpouzi.

Vice President, Giorgos Savvas, and his merry helpers made sure there were plenty of warm, delicious souvlakia coming through.

The President of the Mytilenian Brotherhood of NSW, Stavros Kritikos, and Women's Auxiliary President, Vicky Kritikos, and members of their repsective Committees were also present, which reinforced the strengthening bond between the two Groups.

One of the highlights of the day was certainly when members of Kerkyrean Association (Corfu) joined the festive Agiassiotes in singing New Year's songs and kantades. With their guitars, the Kerkyreans definitely whipped up enthusiasm and cheer throughout their impromptu performance.

"This was an enormous success for our Community, which spurs us keep trying to do our best for our members, friends and the Greek community. We hope our traditions will continue in the future. We wish all Agiassiotes and Mytilenians 2010 be a year of good health, happiness and prosperity," stated President, Nikos Savvas.
